Who We Are

One Plane Away is a registered charity based in Iqaluit, Nunavut.

Our Mission

  • Keeping Nunavut babies bundled up.

  • To relieve poverty by providing clothing and basic supplies for infants and children in need in Nunavut.

  • To benefit the community in a way the law regards as charitable by relieving unemployment of individuals who are unemployed or facing a real prospect of imminent unemployment and are shown to need assistance, through employment-related training programs.

  • To undertake activities as are ancillary and incidental to the attainment of the above-mentioned charitable purposes.

Our Vision

Nunavut babies and young children in need will have access to an adequate supply of clothes and basic items. Nunavut mothers will have access to skill-building training to increase employment opportunities.

Guiding Principles

One Plane Away will help enhance the development of healthy babies and young children by gathering and distributing clothing and supplies. The organization will meet this vision in a manner which promotes Inuit Societal Principles, self-reliance, and increased well-being.

Inuit Societal Principles

  • Pijitsirniq: Serving and providing for family and/or community.

  • Piliriqatigiinniq / Ikajuqtigiinniq: Working together for a common cause.

  • Tunnganarniq: Fostering good spirit by being open, welcoming, and inclusive.

  • Qanuqtuurniq: Being innovative and resourceful.

What We’ve Achieved

Receiving baby clothes and supplies. Groups and individuals across Canada send hundreds of boxes of donations per year. Due to One Plane Away’s online presence, many boxes arrive from the US and the UK. Community groups will hold clothing drives for One Plane Away, i.e. RCMP Ottawa, long-term care facilities, classrooms, church groups and Girl Guides.

Distributing baby clothes and supplies. Nunavut mothers contact One Plane Away via Facebook with requests for supplies for their babies. To date, over 1,600 Nunavut babies have received support from One Plane Away. One Plane Away has sent supplies to all 25 of Nunavut’s fly-in communities.

Inuit employment skill building. One Plane Away has received grants from the Government of Nunavut and Canada Post to offer programs to Inuit mothers. These programs involve providing Inuit mothers sewing machines and supplies to keep. An elder from the community is brought in to teach them traditional sewing skills. The course is usually 10-14 sessions with refreshments provided.

Financial Support

One Plane Away receives financial support through personal monetary donations and ongoing fundraising activities. As a registered charity, it receives donations through Canada Helps. Parcel delivery of baby care packages to moms in all 25 communities throughout Nunavut is supported through the Inuit Child First Initiative.

One Plane Away also received funding from Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) to help with the distribution of feminine products for women, which were included in the Baby Care Packages sent.

The rental cost for our Iqaluit location is supported by Nunastar Fund for Northern Children, Nunastar Properties Inc., and Astro Hill.
